Track Description:
Ugly Flannel, established by Benjamin Nguyen (Guitar), Kate Zacharias (Bass), and Athen Erbter (Drums) in their teen years, has continually evolved alongside its members. The band's combination of relatable lyrics about coming-of-age, hard-hitting instrumentals, and nostalgic alternative and emo affect has quickly made them a fan favorite throughout the Midwest. Flexing their musical versatility in packed punk houses and opening sold-out shows hosted by Audiotree, it’s no surprise that Ugly Flannel’s third studio album ‘Goodbye American Dream’ is eagerly anticipated by the community they’ve nurtured over time.
This latest track lifted from the record - ‘Jamie’ draws sonic inspiration from 2000’s pop-punk and post-hardcore, mediates the melancholic and angrier elements of the overall project, and brims with the band’s distinctly fresh and remarkably infectious energy. Behind Nguyen’s snarling vocals, deftly accompanied by Zacharias’s soaring harmonies, the lyrics reveal difficult truths born of self-reflection.
Nguyen, who wrote the song, explains:
“This song is seeing other people do better without you. It’s about remembering how things used to be and only having fond memories, while the other person would say otherwise.
Cherie was a therapist I had and I never got to see her again, because I was only going to therapy to make other people happy – even though it didn’t really help. Jamie is a made up person but represents new friends or significant others to replace the people you once had.”
