Album Description:
Peace to Mateo is the moniker of Michigan music producer Matt Black. The name, which is a reference to an infamous freestyle from the Notorious B.I.G., nods to Black's hip-hop roots which heavily inspires his production style. Black’s 2018 release Some Strange Reason drew heavy inspiration from Trip-Hop, Dub and video game music. Those elements are still present in his follow up Slow Trip Home, but now infused with a touch of psych rock.
The album features a narrative through line inspired the Twilight Zone episode The Midnight Sun - the plot of which revolves around an artist and her neighbor trying to stay sane as the Earth slowly moves closer to the sun.
“Slow Trip Home" makes heavy use of a unique guitar from the 80s by Casio, the MG-510, which was produced with built-in MIDI capabilities. This allows the instrument the dual function of electric guitar and midi controller.
“Since this album was started almost immediately after I finished Some Strange Reason in 2018, I went through multiple musical phases that have now fused into what you hear on Slow Trip Home. Initially inspired to use more guitar from artists like Khruangbin and Tommy Guerrero, the earliest demos were just guitar arrangements that I remixed - songs like Jupiter Sonata and The Midnight Sun.” Black explains on the creation of the album.
Slow Trip Home was released in May 2024 on the Naturally Digital imprint and is currently available digitally and on compact disc.
