Ugly Flannel fans have witnessed the band’s evolution from fledgling musicians to seasoned songwriters over the course of six years. Benjamin Nguyen (Guitar) and Kate Zacharias (Bass) spout relatable lyrics about coming-of-age to crowds across the Midwest, while the band's hard-hitting timekeeper, Athen Erbter (Drums), provides the rhythmic backbone. The result is a nostalgic alternative and emo sound that falls somewhere between Toadies and The Promise Ring. Ben's songs are lackadaisical and snotty enough to fit the bill at a hardcore punk show, while Kate's bright and uplifting melodies could share the stage with fellow Grand Rapidian ska legends, Mustard Plug. Whether on record or live on stage, Ugly Flannel offers punk with an endless range of sounds and moods.

The band is starting the new year strong with the forthcoming release of their third studio album, Goodbye American Dream. The first single to be taken from the record – Laundry is an incredibly catchy earworm with a surfy undercurrent. Sharing the mic with friend and musical collaborator Sam Cook-Parrott of Radiator Hospital, Zacharias’s powerful vocals offer a depth of range and raw emotion that complements the song’s utterly danceable guitar riff. 

Nguyen, who wrote the track during his time in quarantine, explains further: 

“This song is about spending too much time with a significant other and really wanting alone time. I fell into really bad habits, because I spent months without being at home, which made relatively easy tasks so much harder.” 

Reflecting on the recording process, Zacharias adds:  

“Being vulnerable with your friends through writing music is an insane experience to be able to capture for an audience. ‘Laundry’ is a song where our vulnerability took us to a new sound of music we never predicted. This song will not only be a surprise for our listeners, but it has also come as a surprise to us.”
